Information on Givaudan Safety Data Sheet (SDS) or Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)

1. What does GHS mean?

GHS is an acronym for the Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals. GHS is not a regulation; it is, in fact, a framework or guidance for classifying and labelling hazardous chemicals. Most of the countries and regulatory bodies have adopted these classification and labelling principles recommended by UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe).

2. What is the difference between a MSDS and SDS?

There is little difference in content between SDS (Safety Data Sheet) and MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) as they are basically the same thing. These documents contain and summarise all hazardous information, outlining the dangers, composition, safe handling and disposal of the corresponding substances and mixtures.

MSDS was the name used historically. The MSDS came in multiple formats and had different kinds of information with different levels of detail. Since the introduction of the international UN principles of GHS, we have the Purple Book. GHS describes the format, content and order of the different 16 sections of the SDS. Today, the SDS is published in many languages but only in one format.

3. How do I get an SDS?

There are two ways to receive a Givaudan SDS: For all first time orders to a customer (in the North American; Europe, Africa and Middle East; and Latin American regions) a SDS is issued automatically several days before the order is dispatched and again with the order shipment 12 months after the first shipment. The SDS may be sent electronically if the customer has provided Givaudan an email address for that purpose. Otherwise, the SDS will print at a local site printer and sent to the customer. If a revised SDS is produced by the system, it will be generated for each new order even if the customer has received an SDS in the past 12 months.

In the Asia Pacific region, the regulatory team requests the SDS for the customer. When the customer requests an SDS for a new sample, Sales will request and send a SDS together with the rest of documents required by the customer. SDS Request: An SDS can be provided upon customer request. 4. When do I get an updated SDS?

Major revisions are automatically created when a hazard classification or transport classification is amended. These should be sent to customers receiving orders of that material in the prior 12 months. For minor revisions – CAS change / identifier change etc. – the revision will be sent on receipt of the next order. Major revisions result in a version number (whole integer) increase e.g. 1.0 changes to 2.0. Minor revisions result in version number changes to decimal integer e.g. 1.2 changes to 1.3.

5. In which language do I get an SDS?

An SDS will be sent in the default language of the country for the order unless there is a definite requirement that is communicated to our customer care group.
